Students Enjoy Talented Athlete Scholar Scheme Insight Day

As part of UTC’s career day, selected students attended a Sheffield Hallam University Talented Athlete Scholar Scheme insight day.

Thomas Hawes-Demp is a promising basketball player who currently plays for Derbyshire Trailblazers as a shooting guard.

Holly Brough is a football player for Notts County, YP Academy and South Yorkshire girls. She is also the U 15’s school team captain.

Poppy Hawkins plays football for Notts County and YP academy. She also represents the school football team.

Tristan Arthur plays Ice Hockey for Leeds Junior Knights as a in-line centre.

Gemma Thomas is a roller hockey player who plays for Sheffield Academy and has recently trained with England.

All five students experienced an action packed programme, learning about life as a high performing athlete and what studying might look like at Sheffield Hallam University.

The day kick started with two workshops. The first exploring Sport Psychology, focusing on mindset and how mentality can help improve performance. Students engaged in some breathing techniques and recognising how to keep composed during high pressure situations.

The second workshop covered Performance Nutrition. Here students discussed the required energy demands for a high performance athlete and what nutrients an athlete should consume before, during and after exercise.

In the afternoon, the students got to practically explore strength and conditioning. Sheffield Hallam coaches led activities that are commonly employed to improve the efficiency of an athlete’s overall movement and therefore performance in their sport.

The day concluded with a question and answer session with Commonwealth Games swimmer Jay Lelliot. He provided the students with insightful information about living the life as an elite athlete as well as his core values in life.

It was a fantastic experience and a fitting end to the UTC’s first full academic year as an accredited TASS dual careers centre.
