UTC Graduate Working as a Data Analyst on NHS Placement

Graduate, Cerys Evans, has excelled in her studies after finishing at the UTC.

What did you enjoy about Computing?
I liked working alongside other like-minded people. I was on the VEX Robotics team called ‘Thomas and Friends’ for two years, which was run by the Computing department. It built great interpersonal skills and was a chance to bond with people who had similar academic aspirations. In Year 12, our team qualified for the National Championships and in Year 13 we qualified for the International Championships because we were the runners up in the Nationals. I’m incredibly proud of this achievement!

What did you like about studying at the UTC?
I really enjoyed studying Maths as I love solving problems and taking on a challenge. The Maths department was excellent and fully supported me throughout my time there. I liked having the opportunity to network and connect with industry professionals. Martyn Eggleton, was fantastic and helped me to develop so many relevant skills.

What are you doing now?
I’m a Maths student at Lancaster University, and I’m currently on a placement as a Data Analyst at the NHS. Next year, I’ll then go back to do the final year of my bachelor’s degree. I’ve loved getting involved in extra-curricular activities alongside my university studies, such as working for the Student’s Union. The UTC helped me to learn how to multitask and manage my time effectively, which helped during this experience.

What are your plans after university?

After university, I feel like I’ll be able to keep my options open. I might apply for the NHS Graduate Scheme, or I might pursue a career in another industry. It’s good that my subject is so broad as it allows me to gain transferable skills and use these in any relevant area.

Has the UTC helped to prepare you for your future?
The UTC improved my knowledge within both Computing and Maths, and it helped me to realise what I wanted to do after finishing my studies there. It’s a great school for students who are passionate about their specialism and have the personal drive to succeed.
