Madeleine Davison, Sport Science Specialism

Why did you decide to move to the UTC?
From an early age I knew I wanted to do a Sports related career, so the UTC seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to explore this passion. I was impressed by the unique curriculum and opportunities available here.

What subjects did you study at the UTC and did you enjoy them? Which was your favourite?
I like the competitive nature and the academic side of Sport, it seems like the perfect combination for me. The Science behind Sport really interests me and I’m always keen to find out more. I love using the AstroTurf and Gym in lessons as it’s nice to be active.

Do you mind me asking what grades you received?
My results were D*D*D* in Sport and an A in Maths.

How do you feel about your results?
I’m very pleased with my results and excited to go to my first choice University.

What did you enjoy most about studying at the UTC?
It’s nice that everyone knows each other. You’re preparing yourself for the career that you want to do, so you’re motivated to study and work hard in your lessons. Although it takes me an hour to get to the UTC by public transport, it’s definitely worth the commute. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done! You receive more one-on-one support from tutors which is really nice. I also like the range of different specialisms that the UTC offers, as there’s something for everyone.

Do you have any favourite memories/stand out moments e.g. engagement with a certain project/employer?
We visited the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) next door and got to use the equipment there, which was a great insight into working in the Sports industry. I have enjoyed working with local schools and sports clubs, which involved running sports events. It was good to gain some experience of what my future career may look like.

What are your next steps for the future? Do you have an idea of what career you want to pursue?
I’m looking to go to Nottingham Trent University to study Sports Science, which I’m very excited about. I would love to one day become a Qualified Sports Scientist or a Performance Analyst for a football club.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining the UTC to study X?
Don’t worry about how you will settle in at the UTC. Everyone is welcoming, friendly and wants you to do well. It’s a supportive community and all students are there to learn and expand their skills in their chosen specialism. I would recommend any students who are considering the UTC to definitely go for it.
