Kate Parkin, Sport Science Specialism

Why did you join the UTC?
I chose to join because they had smaller classes sizes, so it was easier to learn as you got more one-to-one support from tutors. There was a higher chance of getting the best grades possible at the UTC, so it seemed like a great experience. Not many places offered a Sports Science course that was as high standard as this one, so I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity.

What did you enjoy about the UTC?
The balance between theory and practical is great, for example, if we did something in the classroom then we’d often do something outside too, like Sports Analysis. It was good to use the high standard facilities – my favourite was using the Astroturf in PE lessons.

The commute to the UTC was worth it, as I felt very comfortable when I studied there. It was a nice environment to learn in because everyone was incredibly supportive and wanted to see each other do well.

Do you mind me asking what grades you received?
I achieved Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction* in my Sport Technical, the top grade achievable, alongside an A in Biology A Level and a C in Maths A Level.

How do you feel about your results?
I’m really happy with my results, I don’t think I could have done much more.

What do you like about your chosen specialism?
I enjoyed the employer links on the Sport Science course, including the Sheffield Sharks and the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), which was next door. With the Sheffield Sharks, we learnt all about sporting events, including how to manage a brand and engage customers effectively. It was good to get an idea of what I could be doing in my future career in the Sports industry.

How does the UTC differ to other schools?
The teachers are always there to help you when you need support. The UTC strongly encourages students to gain experience of working with employers in industry, which helped me with my schoolwork, as I got to see Sport come to life.

What do you want to do in the future?
My career goals are to study a Sport Science and Physiotherapy Degree at The University of Leeds, as I am passionate about pursing a job in this sector. I’m grateful that the UTC provided me with a foundation in Sport that has prepared me for my future career.
