UTC student makes her first steps to helping cancer patients

Health Sciences and Social Care student, Phoebe West, is one step closer to achieving her ambition to become a radiographer and help cancer patients.

Phoebe achieved Distinction, Distinction, Distinction (DDD) in her Health Technical and a B in her Biology A Level. Upon receiving her results she said: “I am thrilled to bits! It’s been a difficult year with Covid, I am so grateful to my teachers for helping me get here.”

In September she will be starting a Radiotherapy and Oncology undergraduate course at Sheffield Hallam University.

“I chose Sheffield Hallam as it’s linked with Western Park and Western Park is one of the best cancer facilities in the UK. I want to work in this field as it’s such a rewarding job, and I love working with people and helping them.”

Earlier in her studies Phoebe approached Western Park Hospital and undertook an experience day to find out more about the field and the hospital. As part of the work experience, she was able to observe a CT scan, where cancer can be diagnosed, and talk with patients.

Discussing her experience at UTC, Phoebe said: “The UTC has given me lots of opportunities. For example, I worked on a project called Patients as Educators where I got to speak with real patients. Also, the teachers here really want you to succeed and they want to help you.”

To other people considering studying at UTC, Phoebe said: “You should 100 percent for go for it, you won’t find a college or school quite like this.”
