Sport Science Student excels in GCSE’s and is excited for future at the UTC
Grace Akers, UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park student, received excellent grades in both her GCSE’s and Sport Science specialism, and is looking forward to her future studies at the UTC.
Why did you decide to move to the UTC?
The options were more appealing and specialised here, which it seemed like a great opportunity to take. As it’s a small school, the benefit is that students and teachers build up strong relationships and support each other. It feels like a community environment, which is nice to work in.
What subjects did you study?
I studied Sport Science, and then I went onto study Health and Social Care, as it was always something I was keen on learning about and I wanted to develop skills within this area. I’m so glad I chose to study this subject, because I got a lot of support from everyone at the UTC and pushed myself to succeed.
What was your most enjoyable thing about the UTC?
I liked working with other students to share ideas and studying within a close-knit group of people. It was nice that everyone knew each other and were always there if you got stuck in your studies.
What grades did you receive in your GCSE’s?
I received a Level 2 Distinction in Health, Level 2 Distinction* in Sport, and then grades between 7-9 in my other eight subjects, which I am extremely proud of! Considering it’s been quite a difficult year for most of us, I am so glad I studied hard in my mock exams and feel relieved with my results.
How do you feel about your next steps?
I will be staying at the UTC and going onto study Health, as the UTC helped me to develop a passion for the subject. I know there will be a lot more content and it will be a step up, but I feel ready for the challenge of my next chapter and know that I can succeed when I work hard.
Do you think the UTC has prepared you well for your future?
Yes definitely! We’ve been able to do work experience and work alongside employers, which was amazing and helped me to develop important skills that I will use in the future. If I didn’t come to the UTC I don’t think I would feel as well prepared for A-levels, so I’m glad I chose to study here.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining the UTC in Year 9/10 to study?
Take the leap you think you need to take. Follow your dreams and be who you want to be. If you don’t, you’ll only regret it. It’s worth taking every opportunity as you never know where it may lead you to!
