Health Sciences Student excels in A Level results and follows dream of studying Adult Nursing Degree

UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Health Student, Ben Charlesworth, received excellent A Level Results and will be continuing his studies within the Health sector.

Ben joined the UTC in September 2018, after previously studying elective modules at secondary school, including History, Spanish, IT and Health and Social Care. He decided to move here because out of all of his post 16 options, he felt the most comfortable studying at the UTC. Ben said: “The rigidity of the school day attracted me even more, as I am one of those people who prefers a routine such as what the school day provides you.”

Ben studied Level 3 Health and Social Care, which he loved, as it provided such a broad range of education, such as the development of babies over the first 1001 days of life, to what support the local authorities provide, to people requiring extra assistance such as home aids and the legal responsibilities they face.

During A Level Results Day, he received a Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction*. He commented: “I am completely overwhelmed by my results and could not be happier with them. My hard work has paid off!”

He added: “My favourite thing about studying here was the level of employer engagement we were involved in and the opportunities from this. A perfect example of this was when I attended a talk by the Director of Public Health for Sheffield, during Employer Engagement Week.” He enquired with the Directors’ team and was given the opportunity to spend his Y12 work experience placement shadowing him.

During lockdown, Ben spent his time balancing coursework through remote learning, whilst also picking up additional hours at his job in a shop during the height of the pandemic. He said: “It taught me a lot about time management, and I feel that this has prepared me for university very well.”

Ben has been accepted to study Adult Nursing at the University of Leeds! He said: “I am ready and raring to go and honestly cannot wait to start my course, as it is something I’ve always dreamed of doing since I was a child.”

“I feel that the UTC has equipped me very well for my next steps in numerous ways. Some of these include an enhanced knowledge of my subject and it’s relatable aspects, such as safeguarding and how to best deal with challenging behaviour, which is something I may have to use on the wards. The style of course I studied here required a lot of academic writing, so this gave me an insight into referencing and citation, which is another useful skill I will need for university.”
