Sport Science student makes Professional Debut for Sheffield Steelers
UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park student Curtis Warburton has recently made his professional debut for Sheffield Steelers, a professional ice hockey team who play at the FLYDSA Arena.
He had been practising with the team before his debut and wore the shirt for the club for the first time in January, against the Nottingham Panthers. Curtis, along with class peer Jordan Griffin, have now both made their professional breakthrough with the Sheffield ice hockey club, whilst studying Level 3 Sport Science at the UTC.
Jessica Stevenson, Principal said, “We are very proud that two of our Post 16 students have made their professional breakthrough at such an early stage in their career. It is such a positive influence to our other learners in key stage 4 who aspire to reach the same goals.”
The game was against the Guildford Flames, where Curtis performed in front of his proud mum and dad, and a crowd of 9,200 supporters at the arena in Sheffield. Coach Aaron Fox gave Curtis his debut in the last period of the game, as Steelers held a 6-1 lead.
Curtis said, “It was a great experience; one I will never forget. There were 12 minutes left in the game and my teammates kept hinting that I might be going on, but I thought ‘no chance!’ Moments later my coach gave me the nod to go on at the next whistle. As I waited to step on the ice I was really nervous, but all that went away as soon as I heard the crowd cheer.”
Jessica said, “We would like to congratulate Curtis who was given his debut in front of an astounding nine thousand supporters at the Sheffield Arena earlier this month. He is very hardworking inside and outside of the classroom and a model student.”
The Sport Science specialism at the UTC allows students to analyse their own performance using a performance profile and to plan and design rehabilitation programmes for sports injuries. It also enables them to develop their knowledge in nutrition, principles of training, gym instructing, sport psychology and the anatomy of the body. Whilst completing these units, Curtis has been able to use himself and his peers to gain a real-life example of how these work if employed in that industry.
