UTC Female Footballers Progress to Regionals
The undefeated girls’ Futsal team at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park has won a South Yorkshire competition and will now progress onto the next heat.
The team has swapped their traditional 11-a-side version of the popular game for the emerging sport of Futsal, which is 5-a-side indoor version. Played on a flat surface with squarer, hockey-sized goals as well as a smaller, size four ball, the game still remains similar to the original.
The Futsal game places a large emphasis on technical ability in high pressure situations and is a great tool to develop techniques the girls can bring into their 11-a-side games. As well as being good for fitness, the game helps the players with their movement, form and tactical awareness.
Earlier this term, UTC entered the local schools’ tournament held at Sheffield Ponds Forge, recording victory over local opposition including Sheffield Springs Academy and Notre Dame High School.
The girls progressed through to the South Yorkshire competition and made a name for themselves by remaining unbeaten again. As a result, they won their group to progress to the regionals.
Mr Moorwood, the U15 girls coach said, “The team has great chemistry and enjoy playing football and Futsal with each other. We haven’t done so well in the football tournament because we don’t score enough goals! However, in Futsal we have found our form and the girls are doing us proud!”
