UTC Sheffield Hosts US Ambassador Visit

UTC Sheffield has hosted a visit from the US Ambassador who spoke to business leaders about the ways in which the city is investing in young people to create a thriving digital economy.

Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson attended a business roundtable at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus, Matilda Street, to hear employers’ views on training the next generation of talent and the challenges and opportunities they are seeing with regards to the economy.

During his visit, on October 24th, Ambassador Johnson also discussed the importance of the USA and UK’s economic relationship and potential opportunities to increase trans-Atlantic trade and investment.

The event was part of a wider two-day visit by Ambassador Johnson to the region. After his meeting at the UTC, Ambassador Johnson went on to visit the Sheffield Business Exhibition and then toured the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

The following day, he attended the official launch of Boeing Sheffield’s first factory in Europe at the AMRC, along with Greg Clark, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Dan Jarvis MP, Sheffield City Region Mayor, and also toured the Drax Power Plant in Selby.

One of the UTC’s sponsors, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, coordinated the roundtable meeting.

Richard Wright, Director of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, and Chair of Sheffield UTC Multi Academy Trust, said: “It is testament to the strides Sheffield has made in the last few years that the Ambassador asked to come early and meet employers and listen to our plans whilst he was here for the Boeing opening.

He added: “The UTC was a great place to host him because we were able to demonstrate the city’s prowess in mechatronics as a technology of the future that will feed our strategic business sectors. The ambassador was pleasantly surprised at the number of Sheffield businesses who trade with the US.”
