UTC Sheffield Students Celebrate Successful Set of GCSE Results

UTC Sheffield students are celebrating a successful set of GCSE results today – Thursday, August 25th.

A total of 102 students at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street sat GCSEs and technical qualifications this summer.

Students have achieved excellent results in mathematics and science with 75% of cohort achieving A* to C in mathematics and 74% in science.  In addition, 61% of students have achieved a GCSE in English at grade A* to C.

Alex Reynolds, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: I am extremely proud to see our second full cohort of students complete their KS4 studies at the UTC.  Our success in English, mathematics and science GCSEs supported by student’s vocational experience and qualifications in ensures students are prepared for the next stage of their education and careers.

At UTC Sheffield students in Years 10 and 11 complete a technical qualification that is backed by employers, as well as GCSEs.

This year 97% of students have successfully passed a technical qualification in either engineering or creative digital media.

UTC Sheffield – which is Ofsted graded ‘good’ – was the first UTC to open in Yorkshire and Humber in September 2013. Young people can join in Year 10 at the age of 14 or in Year 12 at the age of 16.

All students complete a technical qualification in one of two industry specialisms, either advanced engineering and manufacturing or creative and digital media, in addition to GCSEs, and have the opportunity to also take A Levels.

This is the UTC’s second year of academic and technical qualification results since opening in September 2013, which come hot on the heels of the UTC’s first Ofsted inspection earlier this academic year.

Ofsted inspectors recognised in their report that UTC students develop good industry skills on highly effective study programmes, which increase their chances of securing employment and apprenticeships in the region.

A second UTC is opening next month on the Olympic Legacy Park with two more technical specialisms. UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus, on Attercliffe Common, will specialise in healthcare and sports sciences, and computing.

Some Year 12 places are still available for this September. Visit https://www.utcsheffield.org.uk or call 0114 2603970. Follow us on Twitter @UTCSheffield and on Facebook.
