Top Marks For UTC Sheffield Teacher
A UTC Sheffield teacher has been selected for an organisation that mentors trainees in the profession to ensure quality standards and pupil success.
Trudie Hughes has been appointed to the Hallam Teaching School Alliance. The organisation comprises expert teaching practitioners from schools across the South Yorkshire. They provide support to trainee teachers who have just finished their degrees and are working towards becoming fully qualified. Trudie’s specialist subject is English. In addition to working as an English Subject Knowledge Specialist Teacher at UTC Sheffield, she will oversee the training and progress of English trainee teachers for the Hallam Teaching School Alliance.
Trudie said: “I’m very excited about supporting the development of future teachers in English, which is compulsory for pupils and has a significant impact on their future and success.”
Nick Crew, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “Trudie is an outstanding teacher and I would like to congratulate her on this achievement. The skills and knowledge that Trudie develops through this role will be shared across the UTC in all subject areas and benefit all of our students.”
UTC Sheffield is the first university technical college in Yorkshire, and opened in September 2013 for 14 to 19-year-olds.The UTC is a partnership between educationalists and employers, who are providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry-based projects.
Students complete GCSEs and A Levels, as well as a technical qualification in either advanced engineering and manufacturing, or creative and digital. The UTC has been launched to train young people in the skills employers need, and recruits from across South Yorkshire, and from parts of North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.

This is the final year of phased recruitment, which will see the £9.9 million facility reach its full capacity of 600 places for the next academic year.

- UTC Sheffield has been sponsored and led by The Sheffield College with Sheffield Hallam University and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry as co-sponsors. Sheffield City Council initiated the UTC Sheffield application, and is providing the land on a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent.
- UTCs teach one or more technical specialisms that meet the skills shortages in the region. They offer a broad curriculum that combines an academic education with technical and practical learning. Nationally, 30 university technical colleges have already launched.
