UTC Sheffield Recruitment Event For 14-Year-Olds

Students at UTC Sheffield are getting to grips with the latest digital technology and computer coding as part of their studies.

Young people interested in joining UTC Sheffield from the age of 14 this September, and their parents, can find out more about the latest digital learning and how it underpins the curriculum at a free recruitment event on Tuesday 12 May. This includes a range of innovative activities from a tech club to coding robots and looking at virtual reality. They will also find out about the advanced engineering curriculum.

Around 440 students are currently on roll at UTC Sheffield, the first university technical college in Yorkshire, which opened in 2013. Places for Year 10 – students aged 14 – are still available starting this September.

More information is available at a Year 10 taster evening at UTC Sheffield, Matilda Street, on Tuesday, May 12th from 5.30pm to 7.00pm. To book a place, go to: http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/utc-sheffield-taster-event-tickets-16710063249

Parents and young people will have the opportunity to meet the principal, tour the facilities, find out about the employer-related curriculum projects, and careers and higher education opportunities, and get involved in hands-on activities.

Nick Crew, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “Digital literacy underpins everything we do. This year, our students have been involved in some exciting projects including coding classes, designing and programming robots, building websites and apps and using industry standard technology to create their coursework. It’s not too late to apply to join us in Year 10 and I’d like to welcome young people and their parents to find out more about our creative and digital and advanced engineering specialisms.”

The UTC is a partnership between educationalists and employers, who are providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry-based projects.

Students aged 14 to 19 complete GCSEs and A Levels, as well as a technical qualification in either advanced engineering and manufacturing, or creative and digital.  This is the final year of phased recruitment, which will see the £9.9 million facility reach its full capacity of 600 places for the next academic year.

The UTC has been launched to train young people in the skills employers need, and recruits from across South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire. There is a waiting list for Year 12 places – for students aged 16. Young people who join in Year 10 this September will be guaranteed an ongoing place post 16.

UTCs teach one or more technical specialisms that meet the skills shortages in the region. They offer a broad curriculum that combines an academic education with technical and practical learning. Nationally, 30 university technical colleges have already launched and 20 more are due to open by 2016. For more information, go to https://www.utcsheffield.org.uk/ or call 0114 2603970.
