Principal Welcomes RIBA Award Shortlisting
Principal Nick Crew has welcomed UTC Sheffield being shortlisted for a prestigious architectural accolade.
UTC Sheffield is a contender for a Royal Institute of British Architects’ Yorkshire award. The winner will be announced on Thursday April 23rd. The £9.9 million facility, on Matilda Street, Sheffield city centre, is one of five Sheffield buildings from a total of 11 across Yorkshire to be shortlisted.
UTC Sheffield, for students aged 14 to 19, specialises in traditional academic and technical qualifications for the advanced manufacturing and engineering, and creative and digital industries. The first university technical college in Yorkshire, it was designed by HLM Architects and built by Wates Construction, has 440 students and opened in September 2013.
The building incorporates the former Sydney Works, an important historical location for the city’s industrial past. Sydney Works was built in 1902 and was home to the Sydney Silvermiths before being used as an art space. It now houses the latest creative and digital facilities for UTC students. Another of its most notable features is a rooftop multi sports pitch, which makes the best of city centre space.
“We are delighted to have been selected as a finalist for a RIBA Yorkshire award”
Nick Crew, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a finalist for a RIBA Yorkshire award. The high quality design of the UTC has resulted in an outstanding learning environment and a visually striking building, which contrasts the heritage aspect of the Sydney Works with contemporary creative and digital and advanced engineering facilities.”
Year 10 places – for 14-year-olds – are still available for this September as part of a final year of phased recruitment that will see the UTC reach its full capacity for 600 students. The UTC is oversubscribed with a waiting list for Year 12 places (for 16-year-olds). If you apply before March 31st for Year 10, you’ll get in early and be guaranteed an ongoing place post 16.
