UTC Sheffield Year 10 Taster Event

A taster event is being held this week for young people interested in joining UTC Sheffield from the age of 14 this September.

Around 440 students are currently on roll at UTC Sheffield, Matilda Street, the first university technical college in Yorkshire, which opened in September 2013.

The Year 10 taster event takes place at UTC Sheffield on Wednesday, March 18th from 5.30pm to 7.00pm. Go to:

Guests will meet the principal, staff, tour the new facilities, find out about the work-related projects, and get involved in hands-on activities. They will also discover the jobs, careers and higher education opportunities.

The UTC recruits from across South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire, and currently has a waiting list for Year 12 places. Young people applying before March 31st for Year 10 this September will be guaranteed an ongoing place post 16. This is the final year of phased recruitment, which will see the £9.9 million facility reach its full capacity of 600 places for the next academic year.

Nick Crew, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: “We are a small and specialist institution, where every child is known. Our vision is to develop the next generation of creatives, designers, engineers and manufacturers, providing high quality careers for young people and talent for businesses in our region. I look forward to sharing that with guests attending our Year 10 taster event.”

Students complete GCSEs and A Levels, as well as a technical qualification in either advanced engineering and manufacturing, or creative and digital. Employers set work-related projects and support the curriculum.

UTCs teach one or more technical specialisms that meet the skills shortages in the region. They offer a broad curriculum that combines an academic education with technical and practical learning.  Nationally, 30 university technical colleges have already launched and 20 more are due to open by 2016.

More than 40 employers are backing UTC Sheffield in a range of ways. This includes providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry-based projects.

UTC Sheffield has been sponsored and led by The Sheffield College with Sheffield Hallam University and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry as co-sponsors.
