UTC Sheffield Taster Event

Parents and young people can learn more about the new £9.9 million University Technical College (UTC) Sheffield at a taster event this week.

UTC Sheffield is hosting an open evening on Tuesday March 25th, between 6pm and 7pm, for parents and young people to find out about courses and careers in engineering, technology, and creative and digital media.

The UTC Sheffield, for 14 to 19 year-olds, is the first institution of its kind to open in Yorkshire and the Humber, and is based in the city centre on Matilda Street. Students complete GCSEs and A-levels alongside specialist technical qualifications. Applications for Year 10 and Year 12 places starting this September are still being accepted.

Parents and young people will have a chance to meet the UTC Sheffield Principal and other staff, tour the new facilities, find out about the work-related projects, and get involved in hands-on activities. They will also discover the jobs, careers and higher education opportunities that studying at UTC Sheffield leads to.

Principal Nick Crew said: “We offer traditional academic qualifications alongside technical courses which enable young people to gain the skills that employers need and give them the chance to go into careers or onto university afterwards.”

UTCs are a new type of academy, funded by the Department for Education, which offer a combination of academic and technical qualifications that match regional employers’ skills needs and boost young people’s career prospects.

UTC Sheffield opened in September 2013 and is tailored to two specific sectors where there are skills gaps regionally. They are the advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative and digital media sectors.

More than 40 employers are backing UTC Sheffield in a range of ways. This includes providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry based projects.
