Showcase For Year 10 Places
Young people interested in applying for a Year 10 place at the newly opened £9.9 million University Technical College (UTC) Sheffield are invited to attend a showcase event.
UTC Sheffield offers GCSEs and A-levels alongside specialist technical courses in advanced engineering, technology and the creative industries. Applications for September 2014 places are still being accepted. Young people who apply for a Year 10 place now are guaranteed an ongoing place at aged 16 when competition for places is tougher.
The curriculum is supported by more than 40 employers and provides traditional academic and technical qualifications tailored to two sectors where there are skills gaps regionally: advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative and digital media.
The free showcase event for young people wanting a Year 10 place, and their parents, takes place on Tuesday, March 11th, from 6pm to 8pm at UTC Sheffield, Matilda Street, Sheffield city centre. To book your free place go to: http://utcsheffieldshowcase11mar.eventbrite.com/.
Parents and young people will have a chance to meet the UTC Sheffield Principal, tour the new facilities, talk to employers involved in the curriculum, find out about the work-related projects, get involved in hands-on activities and discover the opportunities that studying at the UTC Sheffield leads to including further study, going into the workplace or onto university afterwards.
Principal Nick Crew said: “We appreciate that moving schools at a younger age may seem daunting to some young people. However, we have a strong support package in place to ensure a smooth transition. UTC Sheffield is a small and specialist institution where every child is known.”
He added: “We deliver a well rounded education offering traditional academic and technical qualifications in specialist skills that enhance students’ career prospects. I look forward to welcoming young people and their parents to show them around our fantastic facilities, the opportunities our students benefit from and to answer any questions they have.”
UTC Sheffield is the first of its kind in Yorkshire and the Humber. It opened its doors to students in September 2013 and was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester the following month.
There are currently more than 200 students aged 14 to 19-years-old based at UTC Sheffield, which has capacity longer term for a maximum of 600 students.
UTC Sheffield opened in September 2013 and has been sponsored and led by The Sheffield College with Sheffield Hallam University and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry as co-sponsors. Sheffield City Council initiated the application, and is providing the land on a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent.
More than 40 employers are backing UTC Sheffield in a range of ways. This includes providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and shaping the curriculum and its content by setting industry based projects.
Key supporters include Siemens, Newburgh Engineering, Rolls-Royce, Sheffield Forgemasters, Tata Steel, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, Performance Engineered Solutions, Team Cooper Games, Warp Films, Sumo, Resolve IT and Visionmix.
UTC Sheffield is fitted with £1 million of specialist equipment including top specification engineering systems and robotics, high tech design and sound studios, and an all weather roof-top sports pitch.
