University Technical College Sheffield – Free Information Event
The UTC Sheffield, which will specialise in engineering and creative industries qualifications, and opens next year, aims to get a balance of girls and boys.
Young people across Sheffield City Region can find out more about a new college opening next year. The University Technical College Sheffield is for 14 to 19-year-olds, and the first of its kind in Yorkshire.
It will open on Shoreham Street, Sheffield, in September 2013 and will specialise in academic and vocational qualifications, and work-based learning, for the advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative industries sectors.
The next free information session takes place on Tuesday December 4th from 6pm to 8pm at the Workstation, Paternoster Row, Sheffield. To book a place, go to www.utcsheffield.org.uk/events.
Nick Crew, Principal, said: “We’ve had lots of interest at our previous taster events, and I am looking forward to meeting more parents and young people and explaining what is so distinctive about the UTC Sheffield.”
He added: “Girls are especially welcome. Women have traditionally been under represented in engineering and technology. We want a balance of boys and girls studying at the UTC Sheffield which offers a brand new and exciting choice for young people in Sheffield City Region.”
The £9.9 million UTC Sheffield will be fitted with £1 million of specialist equipment including engineering mini factories, high tech design and sound studios, and a multi-use rooftop five-a-side football pitch. GCSEs and A-levels will be offered alongside specialist vocational diploma courses.
Young people will develop the academic and technical skills to secure jobs in the advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative media industries sectors.
At the taster event, parents and young people will have the chance to meet the new UTC Sheffield Principal and some of the employers involved. They will gain an overview of, and the latest update on the project.
