UTC Sheffield student Cameron Tawn is celebrating after securing an apprenticeship with a top employer.

The 18-year-old, from Barnsley, has achieved a Cambridge Technical qualification in engineering achieving a double distinction as well as an A Level in maths. Cameron also completed AS Level physics last year.

Now he is going onto a three-year degree apprenticeship with Inspec Solutions based in Sheffield that provides control and safety solutions to leading UK firms such as Perenco, ITM and Cristal.

Cameron is starting with the company as an Assistant Control System Engineer, and will earn as he learns. He is about to enroll on a Sheffield Hallam University degree course which will be delivered at The Roundhouse College, Derby, and his studies will be paid by his employer.

He said: “I’m overwhelmed with my results as they are a massive improvement on what I achieved last year. It shows that hard work does eventually pay off in the end. I am really happy with myself and thankful to all the staff at UTC Sheffield for the effort they have all put in over the past two years.”

During his time at the UTC, Cameron took part in the WorldSkills UK last year and was highly commended in the industrial control competition.

Cameron commented: “Engineering is a really exciting career to go into. I believe that it is the reason why the world continues to turn today in terms of the technological and industrial advancement that we are all living in.”

He added: “I’ve really enjoyed studying at UTC Sheffield. It’s opened my eyes to all the career opportunities out there for engineering. What UTC Sheffield has shown me is that university is not the only choice that you have after finishing A Levels.

“There are many different paths that you can take from completing an internship or apprenticeship to graduating from a degree. If you want to get hands on experience with employers and understand what it’s like to get skills for the working world, then the UTC is the place to study.”

Alex Reynolds, Principal, UTC Sheffield City Centre, said: “Cameron’s hard work and determination have really paid off.  He has shown the dedication and commitment that our employers are looking for and this has resulted in his success at WorldSkills, his results and his destination. He has a very exciting future ahead of him.”
