UTC Sheffield student Daniel Pickering is celebrating after gaining top grades to study rocket science at a prestigious Russell Group university.
The 18-year-old has completed a technical qualification in engineering as well as three A Levels at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street.
In his A Levels, Daniel achieved a grade A* in maths, and grade As in further maths and physics. He gained a distinction* in the engineering technical qualification.
Now, he is going on to the University of Sheffield to start a Degree in Aerospace Engineering, which involves the study of new technologies for aviation and spacecraft. He said: “I felt happy when I found out the results.”
During his time at the UTC, Daniel was part of a student team that won a gold medal in the industrial control skills competition at WorldSkills UK.
The UTC students were ranked among the top performers for engineering skills after competing against colleges, employers and universities from across the country. Overall, the UTC Sheffield team came joint fifth in the UK medal table last year.
Daniel added: “I really enjoy solving problems and making things work, and that’s what appeals to me about engineering and maths. It was an amazing feeling to win a gold medal at WorldSkills UK and taking part in that taught me how to work under pressure and to deadline. That has prepared me really well for university especially as industrial control is also on the syllabus.”
His other highlights from being at the UTC include applying and getting through to the interview stage at the University of Cambridge; and taking part in a Nuffield research project at the University of Sheffield. That involved using computer simulation and software to analyse fluid flow in abnormalities affecting the blood vessels.
