Studying at UTC Sheffield has put Tom Spires on course for an international electrical engineering career with his university fees paid for by an employer.

The 18-year-old, from Doncaster, has been selected for a sponsored cadet training programme as a junior electro-technical officer with global energy giant BP.

Tom is starting a Degree in Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University this September with all of his tuition fees paid for by BP.

As part of his studies next year, Tom will spend four months stationed on a gas carrier ship travelling from Venezuela to Australia.

BP is funding Tom’s university sandwich course, which includes several work placements including training abroad.

Tom said: “It’s such a fantastic career opportunity and the fact that my studies are paid for by the employer in addition to receiving a salary is great.

“I’m really looking forward to the placement abroad where I will learn about responsibility for every piece of electrical equipment on the ship. “

Tom has completed a technical qualification in engineering at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street and gained a distinction. He also achieved two C grade A Levels in maths and physics.

Tom said: “I feel great. I’m really happy with my results because I’ve got what I need to move on to the next stage.

During his time at the UTC, Tom enjoyed the opportunity to develop industry related skills, which included winning a silver medal in WorldSkills UK 2016 in the mechatronics category.

He added: “I’d definitely recommend the UTC. The emphasis on technical as well as academic qualifications has helped me to develop a problem solving mindset. It’s boosted my confidence and understanding of how to apply theory to solving practical challenges. The staff are very knowledgeable.”
