Molly, Creative and Digital
UTC Sheffield student, Molly, has been commended after taking part in Network Rail’s Could IT Be You? National Competition. which is aimed at getting more young women into information technology roles and dispels myths around jobs in the industry.
Molly, 18, who is completing a technical qualification in creative and digital, fought off tough competition to be selected as one of 75 finalists nationally. She then took part in the finals held in Milton Keynes on February 19th and was presented with a certificate on completion of the competition.
The competition comprised three project briefs – a teamwork challenge, designing an idea for a mobile app and then pitching it to a panel of judges. She also had the chance to speak to industry professionals as part of a question and answer session afterwards.
Molly said: “The competition was great! I thoroughly enjoyed myself, met so many amazing people and learnt so much. It was a fantastic opportunity.”
She continued: “It’s good to have the experience of taking part in these competitions, creating work for employers and building a portfolio for our future career as part of our studies at UTC Sheffield.”
Molly added: “I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to Claire Saunders and Susan Cooklin and all of those involved with Could IT Be You? I really appreciate everything that they have done for me.”
Currently, women comprise 51% of the population but only 17% of the information technology industry. A recent survey by Network Rail of 16 to 24-year-old women found that 64% had not considered a career in IT. For more information, visit https://www.coulditbu.co.uk/
