Charlie, Engineering

Y10 student Charlie first heard about the UTC through his cousin who had attended the year before. After hearing his cousin say how much he enjoyed it, Charlie decided to take a look at the website and visit the UTC before applying for a place. Charlie is now in Y10 at the UTC City Centre Campus studying Engineering and Product Design alongside his core GCSEs.

‘I really enjoy Engineering, I like everything from making and building to taking things apart. I’m a practical learner and I think the UTC is a better route to college, work or an apprenticeship.

‘At the UTC I’ve worked with Rolls-Royce, which was really good! Their employees came in and spoke to us, and it gave us an accurate insight into what they do and what we can do in Engineering.’

Within his core subjects Charlie also studies Citizenship: ‘I really like Citizenship. At the moment, we’re working in groups on a campaign.  We had to choose something we were passionate about and my group has chosen mental health support for young people, as we don’t think there’s enough out there. We’re campaigning for more help and recognition. It’s really interesting.’

When asked to describe the UTC in three words Charlie said, ‘One big family.’
