Employer-led Project: Balfour Beatty ‘Shaping Better Futures’
Invited by Mr Newton, representing Balfour Beatty and it’s many sectors, Y9 students were given an insight into the varied and exciting world of working with one of the UKs largest employers.
We were joined by;
- Beth Walker, Environment and Sustainability Graduate part of Balfour Beatty’s Central Rail Systems Alliance who studied for a BSc in Geography from University of Sheffield and a MSc in Environmental Science and Management from York University.
- Adam Green, Graduate Software Engineer who works within the rail sector, Omnicom who studied a Master’s degree in Physics at Warwick University.
- Tegan Younger, who is a Civil Engineer within Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution and studied MEng in Civil & Structural Engineering from University of Leeds.
The event began with a dynamic audio-visual presentation that introduced the company and its many facets and branches not only in STEM roles but also across CDM.
Students were informed that Balfour Beatty take employees and apprentices at all ages from 16+ and from each level of ability up to degree level apprenticeships so students should look out in January when the 2022 vacancies are advertised.
After an insight into the company the students were then set a challenge to improve on the new ‘T Pylon’ that has just been developed and design, model and market a new Pylon that could be used to aesthetically adorn the nations landscape whilst having a sustainability feature capturing energy whilst also carrying the much needed power into our homes.
The competition was fierce but in their groups the Y9s generated some exceptional designs. The winning teams were: ‘APP’ – Most practical, ‘Renovare’ – Most creative & ‘Leaf’ Best marketing.
The event culminated in presentation to Y13 about pathways for them as they look to leave the UTC and we are pleased to say we look forward to working with our colleagues at Balfour Beatty very soon.
