GCSE Student Enthusiastic to be continuing studies at the UTC after fantastic results

UTC Sheffield City GCSE results 2021 Harvey Hewat-Pike with his resukts

UTC Student, Harvey Hewat-Pike, is keen to continue his studies in the Creative and Digital Media sector.

When did you start at the UTC? (What year)
Year 9

Where did you study previously?
Aston Academy

Why did you decide to move to the UTC?
I was interested in the fact that the UTC does specialisms and I was keen to explore the Engineering course. I felt like it gave me more of an option to choose what I wanted my career to be in the future.

What subjects did you study at the UTC and did you enjoy them? Which was your favourite?
Initially I studied Engineering and then moved onto Creative and Digital Media [CDM]. Before I joined the UTC, I had a passion for Photography, so decided that I wanted to continue to explore this and the CDM course looked appealing. The teachers supported me in my decision, and I settled in really easily; better than I thought I would, considering I joined half way through Year 9.

Do you mind me asking what grades you received?
I received an M2 for Creative Imedia, M2 for Engineering, 55 for Combined Science, 4 for Mathematics, 5 for English Language and a 6 for Art and Design:Photography.

How do you feel about your results?
I feel really happy about my results, and glad my hard work paid off. Thank you UTC.

What did you enjoy most about studying at the UTC?
I loved the Creative and Digital Media course the most as every lesson is different and we get to explore the different areas, including film, photography and radio. There’s quite a lot of freedom to pursue what you want to do, and the teachers also support you and help you to find out what careers may suit you.

Do you have any favourite memories/stand out moments e.g. engagement with a certain project/employer?
Making a music album cover was one of my favourite projects, as I developed my creativity skills and got the chance to work both independently and in a team. During this task, I was able to think of my own ideas and had the freedom to do what I wanted.

How have you found lockdown – did you find it challenging or did you learn anything from it?
Lockdown was challenging for me, but I learnt how to be more independent and solve problems when participating in online lessons.

What’s been your biggest achievement during your time at the UTC?
I’m proud of doing well in my final piece for my GCSE Photography, as I put in a lot of time and effort.

Have you done any extra curricular activities at the UTC? Or have you had hobbies alongside your studies?
Outside of my studies I enjoy Photography, which I think has helped with my schoolwork. I do Urban Exploring, which involves taking photos of derelict buildings with my friends.

What are your next steps for the future? Do you have an idea of what career you want to pursue?
I’m looking forward to staying on at the UTC’s sixth form, where I’ll be studying A Level Photography and Creative and Digital Media. As I’ve enjoyed this specialism so much at GCSE level, I’m excited to see where it will take me these next two years.

What skills/knowledge from the UTC has helped you reach your destination?
I’ve learnt how to use my own time more wisely, for example, during my study periods and independent study.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining the UTC to study?
My advice would be to give it a try. It’s a good school with fantastic specialisms that help students to discover what career they might want to do in the future.
