UTC Sheffield City Centre students achieve strong GCSE and technical results

UTC Sheffield City Centre students are celebrating a set of strong GCSE and technical results this year.

The UTC – which is Ofsted graded ‘good’ – is a technical school for 13 to 19-year-olds based on Matilda Street in Sheffield.

Students complete academic as well as technical qualifications in engineering or creative and digital media, backed by employers.

A total of 101 students sat GCSE exams this year and the pass rate is 98.1%.  Of those students, 58% have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English.

Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects have performed strongly with 70% of students gaining a grade 4 or above in maths and 42% a grade 5 or above.

In science, 69% of students achieved a grade 4 or above with 41.4% gaining a grade 5 or above in two sciences.

The engineering technical qualifications pass rate is 81% in design and 80% in manufacturing. Those students who studied systems control and electronics have achieved a pass rate of 74%.

For creative and digital media, the technical qualifications pass rate is 74% for creative and digital media and 74% in art.

The technical qualifications involve working on employer-led projects and developing skills related to the subject specialism as well as team working and problem solving skills. The £10 million UTC is equipped with cutting edge industry standard facilities.

UTCs are government funded technical schools that have been established to provide technical learning opportunities in partnership with employers and universities. They provide academic and technical qualifications to match the skills needs of regional employers, supporting economic growth and employment.
