UTC students engage in engineering extravaganza: Get up to Speed with STEM

UTC Sheffield City Centre Year 9 students joined over 2000 young people from South Yorkshire for the inspiring Get up to Speed STEM careers event at Magna Science Adventure Centre.

The annual occasion, which is now in its ninth year, saw over 90 exhibitors, attractions and activities, including an interactive stand hosted by the UTC, all championing the world of science, engineering, technology and maths.

Year 9 engineering and creative and digital students from the UTC attended. It was a great opportunity for them to see a fantastic selection of businesses and potential career options available, as well as engaging with people from within the industry. The stands included McLaren, Tesla, The Royal Navy, Mazak Europe and Sheffield Formula Racing, to name a few.

As part of the UTC’s interactive stand, Head of Engineering, Letisha Smith, and engineering teacher, Adrian Dulley, demonstrated how they use a basic injection moulding machine. The machine was a simple version of those used by large companies in industry, and something used on the UTC’s engineering course. The students attending the event were excited to be able to use the machine to mould their own cars out of recycled plastic. Speaking about the event, Letisha said, “It gives us a chance to talk to students about engineering, particularly the younger students so they can think about it early on.”

Adrian added, “It opens their eyes to different opportunities. Lots of the students who come to this event don’t have many practically-based subjects at their school so it’s great to show them what we offer at the UTC.”

We spoke to Year 9 creative and digital students, Rosie and Vanessa, about their experience of the day. Rosie said, “I’d like to be a character designer in the future so it’s great to be able to have this opportunity.”

Vanessa commented, “We’ve got to do lots of cool stuff, like try out spray painting. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the stands and what else we can try.”

We also spoke to Year 9 engineering students Dylan and Oliver. Oliver said, “My favourite thing so far has been seeing the McLaren car. In the future I’d like to engineer bikes, so I’ve looked at Mazak who make parts.”

Dylan added, “It’s a great opportunity to see what sort of jobs there are and talk to employers. My dream employer is AMRC. I want to be a design engineer.”

The day showcased the incredible opportunities available to our students, and it was great to be able to demonstrate the prospects on offer at the UTC.
