Mitch On Track For Music Technology Career

Nineteen-year-old Mitch Morton is on track to launch a successful music career after winning a global competition.

The former UTC Sheffield City Centre campus student has beaten around 4,000 people to win a three-year DJ management contract playing at clubs in Ibiza this summer.

“I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to prove myself. When I was told that I had won the prize, I felt total disbelief,” said Mitch, from Swallownest in Sheffield.

He added: “The three-year contract will give me access to the electronic music world, playing at a huge choice of clubs and venues, and will run alongside my music tech studies at Leeds Beckett, progressing me even more.”

The competition aims to spot emerging talent, and gives up and coming electronic music artists a platform to be seen and heard. It is organised by management company Emerging Ibiza, which is linked to some of the best clubs and artists in the world.

Mitch is currently studying a music technology degree at Leeds Beckett University. His ambition is to become a music producer.

Prior to university, Mitch completed a creative and digital technical qualification, which is equivalent to A Levels, at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street. For more information about places starting this September, visit

The first of its kind in Yorkshire, UTC Sheffield equips young people with the skills that employers need. Mitch is one of the first students to graduate from the UTC Sheffield City Centre campus, which opened in September 2013.

Mitch said: “It was brilliant studying at the UTC. You get more than a qualification including networking opportunities, and the chance to meet employers who give you work experience or opportunities that further your career. The facilities were great and industry standard, so you work with the technology that you’ll use in the world of work.”

Brigidin Crowther, Assistant Principal and Creative Industries specialist, UTC Sheffield City Centre campus, said: “Mitch showed his talent for music and mixing and we were able to offer him an opportunity to work every week with music producers through our links with Red Tape studio. We are thrilled with his success and expect global DJ domination to follow!”

Mitch had to submit a DJ mix for the competition and is one of two competition winners. In addition to the management contract, he has also won the chance to play a set at Space Ibiza. For more information, visit

Nick Crew, Executive Principal, UTC Sheffield, added: “We offer technical learning as well as academic qualification that are tailored to employers’ needs. It’s great to see one of our first ever students successfully progress at university and get a head start on their career ambitions.”
