Where a Passion for Sport Can Lead…

On Tuesday 26th April, those interested in studying Sports Science at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park were invited to attend an activity-packed taster event at the Sheffield Hallam University Centre for Sports Engineering Research (CSER).  Sheffield Hallam is a key sponsor of UTC Sheffield and already helping to shape the curriculum and opportunities at the second UTC.

The CSER is an internationally renowned hub of excellence for sports research, undertaking projects for global sporting brands such as Adidas, Prince, Ping, Babolat, Nike, Mitre and Gunn and Moore. The Centre also works extensively with sports organisations such as the International Tennis Federation, FIFA, the English Institute of Sport, the Scottish Institute of Sport and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The Sheffield Hallam team worked with 15 different sports in their preparations for the London Olympics 2012 and contributed to at least 24 of the medals won by Team GB.  In fact, the work of the Centre was fundamental to the approach of ‘marginal gains’ in equipment and techniques that underpinned the extraordinary success of Team GB. The relationship with UK Sport has now expanded further, and work is already well underway in preparation for Rio 2016. The centre is just one of the sporting industry employer partners linked with the new UTC at the Olympic Legacy Park.

The event opened with a welcome from Principal Sarah Clark and then guests made their way round three exciting demonstrations:

  1. Cycling Biomechanics – a demonstration that explored some of the techniques used to understand the biomechanics of cycling, and how bike setup can be optimised for performance and technique
  2. Football Trajectory Testing – a demonstration that showed methods for testing the aerodynamics of footballs, launching footballs across the lab and filming them with high speed video
  3. 3D Body Scanning – a demonstration to show the technologies and applications of 3D body scanning.

Sports Science at UTC Sheffield will equip students with the skills they need to pursue careers as Elite Athletes, Researchers, Sports Scientists, Physiotherapists, Personal Trainers, Exercise Psychologists and many more careers within the sporting sector. Students will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and access to professional standard sporting equipment including a fitness suite, a professional rugby pitch, an activity studio including 3D motion capture facility, access to the English institute of Sport and much more!
