Why study Chemistry?
Do you take pleasure in working out difficult ideas? Do you enjoy logic problems, learning ideas that ‘click’ beautifully together? Then you would enjoy Chemistry. Studying Chemistry is like studying a logical game so that once you know the ‘rules of Chemistry’ you can ‘play’ with the chemical ideas. However, just as in a game you must know the rules, so you must be prepared to memorise the small number of details.
Chemistry is a concise subject that makes you think. If you study A level Chemistry then you should be able to ask ‘Why?’ and get a good answer. You will find AS Chemistry explains chemical ideas mostly using models, while A2 Chemistry explains chemical ideas using Maths and expanding the models used in organic chemistry.
Chemistry is the ‘central science’ with core concepts that underpin many phenomena in all areas of science and technology.
Chemistry is widely recognised by universities and employers as it demonstrates your ability as an all rounder: thinking logically, solving problems, applying abstract concepts and being a capable mathematician.
Career prospects are vast if you have A-level Chemistry including Chemical and Material Engineering, Metallurgy, Forensic Science, Law, Medicine and Dentistry. It is also the first choice in other degree courses, such as Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Marine Chemistry.
GCE A/AS Level or Equivalent
A Level Chemistry will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of chemistry. It covers the key concepts of chemistry and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A Level Chemistry highly appealing.
You will learn about chemistry in a range of different contexts and the impact it has on industry and many aspects of everyday life. You will learn to investigate and solve problems in a range of contexts.

How will it be delivered?
- Total of 6 hours of examinations (3 x 2 hours) taken at the end of the course
- A wide range of question types including multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions
- Opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of both theory and practical skills through the examinations
Grade 6 or better in Combined Science or Chemistry and at least grade 5 in Maths and English Language.
Students must select a specialism (Engineering or Creative & Digital Media) alongside this course.
