Meet our employer partner, Quality Context

Posted: 18 July 2018

From the experience we’ve had so far, it’s been great to see how the students react to working with us – they are always really positive, really engaged and keen to ask questions.

We met with Becky Wilsdon, Marketing Executive at Quality Context, to talk about working with UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus.

What does your business do?

We offer consultancy and analytical testing services to pharmaceutical and healthcare businesses worldwide. The company was founded in 2009 by our Director Kate Krachai to provide cost-effective quality solutions to the pharmaceutical industry.

We have a specially equipped and regulated laboratory which provides a range of analytical testing services for pharmaceutical and healthcare products. We also have a temperature controlled secondary packaging and warehouse facility to import, package and distribute medicinal products. On the consultancy side, we work with pharmaceutical and healthcare companies to help them improve performance along with offering auditing and training services. It’s wide ranging but also very specialist.

Why did you get involved with UTC Sheffield?

We were keen to work with education partners to help make science real for students. When we saw that a second university technical college was going to open in Sheffield specialising in Health Sciences and located just around the corner on the Olympic Legacy Park, it seemed an obvious connection.

What sort of things have you done at the UTC?

Members of our staff team visit the UTC campus to deliver talks about careers available in science and support demonstrations on titration, which is a laboratory method of chemical analysis. These talks are particularly useful for the Year 10 and Year 11 students, as titration features on their GCSE exams. Students from the UTC also have the opportunity to tour our lab facilities at Quality Context and see some of what we do in action.

Do you provide work experience opportunities?

Last year, we offered a work experience placement for a UTC student, Szymon, who wants to pursue a career in medicine. He was able to work with the lab technicians supporting the set up and use of machinery in the laboratory. It was great to see Szymon come out of his shell and build his confidence as the placement progressed and to see how his skills developed.

Has it been worthwhile working with the UTC?

From the experience we’ve had so far, it’s been great to see how the students react to working with us – they are always really positive, really engaged and keen to ask questions.

In the future we’ll need to recruit more scientists and we think it’s really important to expose young people to the opportunities available in science. By working with the UTC, we are helping to do this.
