The Sheffield UTC Academy Trust

The Sheffield UTC Academy ‘Members of the Trust’ who represent the main sponsors of the UTC:

  • The Sheffield College, Jason Pepper – appointed 31/5/11 who is Executive Director Finance & Resources for The Sheffield College, Director of Sparks Managed Services Ltd, Director of Sparks Teaching Services Ltd, Director of Sparks Solutions Ltd.  He is also a Trustee of The Sheffield College Students’ Trust, Trustee of Sheffield Futures and a Governor at Oughtibridge Primary School.  Jason also chairs the Resources Committee.
  • Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Richard Wright –  appointed 31/5/11 who is the Executive Director of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Chair of Governors for The Sheffield College.  Member of the Executive Board of the NCSEM.  Richard is the Link Governor for Business, Enterprise and Commercial.

A further nine Directors are appointed representing key stakeholders in the South Yorkshire region:

  • Sheffield Local Authority, Councillor Ian Saunders who was appointed 7/7/15 to replace Councillor Leigh Bramall, appointed 24/11/14 resigned 7/7/15, who replaced Cllr Jackie Drayton appointed 28/8/12 resigned 24/11/14. He is a member of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
  • Sheffield Local Authority, Gary Drabble who was appointed 15/9/14. Gary works for the Local Authority 14-19 team and is the STEM Strategy Manager. Gary is the link Governor for Health & Safety and is Vice Chair of the Resources sub-committee.
  • University of Sheffield, Professor Russell Hand appointed 17/5/12 is Professor of Glass Science & Engineering, University of Sheffield. Russell is the Link Governor for the Science Faculty and a Vice Chair of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
  • Engineering Employers:
    • David Greenan appointed 11/1/13 is a director for Newburgh Precision. David is the Link Governor for Engineeering & Manufacturing and is a member of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
    • Jon Stewart appointed 12/9/14 is a director for Siemens.  Jon is the Chair of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
    • Martin Wood appointed 7/7/15 is the Business Development Director for AESSeal and is the Company of Cutlers’ in Hallamshire representative. Martin was appointed to replace Gordon Bridge (appointed 12/9/14 resigned 14/5/15) who had replaced Bill Speirs (appointed 17/5/12 resigned 12/9/14). Martin is the BDT Link Governor.
  • Creative & Digital Industries
    • Chris Dymond appointed 28/8/12 who is Director of Unfolding Innovation Industries. Chris is the Link Governor for CDM and a member of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
    • David Kay appointed 31/5/11 who is the Strategic Development Director of Sero Consulting. David is the Link Governor for English and Communications and is a member of the Resources sub-committee.
  • Principal of the UTC, Nick Crew – appointed as a Trustee 22/11/12.  Nick attends all meetings in his ex-officio capacity.
  • UTC Staff Representative, Steve Schofield – appointed 1/9/13
    “Hello, my name is Steve Schofield and I teach A-level and GCSE English here at UTC Sheffield.  I have been teaching for 19 years, the last 10 in the 16-19 sector.  I moderate A-level English Language for one of the main exam boards, this year will be my 7th year on the team.  A UTC would have been my choice at 14, I left school and attended a technical college and became a qualified motor vehicle technician and remained in the profession until my early 20s.  Moving into teaching was something I had always considered, and I genuinely enjoy my job. I became the Staff Governor because I want to be as involved as I can in the journey for this fantastic College, and I also understand the importance of communication across all parts of college life.”
  • Parent Governers
    • Simon Jackson appointed 12/9/14.  Simon is a member of the Strategic Development sub-committee.
      “Hi, my name is Simon Jackson and I am a Parent Governor. I spent many years working in the Insurance Industry both in Sheffield & Leeds, and currently work for Royal Mail. I have been involved with the UTC from an early stage, taking part in focus groups prior to commencement of work on the building. My daughter is currently studying Creative & Digital Media and my son Advanced Engineering. The UTC has made an Excellent start and provides a Unique Opportunity for students aged 14+ across our region.”
    • Shaista Rashid appointed 4/12/14.  Shaista is an employee of The Sheffield College.
      “I am the parent of a Y12 student currently undertaking the level 2 qualification in Creative Digital Media. I have worked in education for over 14 years and am currently employed with Sheffield College within the student wellbeing and safeguarding team.  I welcome the opportunity to continue supporting the UTC in its continued reputation for excellent educational provision and opportunity.”

Meeting and reporting arrangements

  1. The full governing body meets on four occasions during the academic year, the full governing body is informed by a further three meetings for each sub-group.
  1. The Principal provides a full Principal’s Report prior to each full governing body meeting giving full information about the UTC in the key areas of:
  • Principal’s Summary
  • Business Manager Updates (Health & Safety, First Aid & Estates)
  • KPIs (Financial & Student performance)
  • Curriculum, teaching & learning
  • Behaviour, attendance & safety
  • Achievement & Progress
  • Leadership & Management
  • Stakeholder and Employer Engagement
  • Student support and SMSC
  1. The Principal and Chair of Governor meet monthly at the UTC/TSC for 1:1 sessions and learning walks.
  1. Members of the governing body are very active in supporting the many events held at the UTC during and after the college day including visits by leading educational figures, Members of Parliament, employer breakfast meetings, Student Awards, Parent Consultation events, UTC recruitment events and learning walks.
  1. The Health & Safety Governor attends the half termly Health & Safety meetings, inspects the Fire Log and H&S check list and does termly Health & Safety Inspections with the Business and Operations Manager.

Governor training

UTC Sheffield uses the Sheffield Local Authority Governor Services team to provide Clerking for meetings, governor training, advice and support. Governors have actively engaged in a range of training events including; Induction for new governors, Safeguarding, H&S for governors, Learning to Work – Bridging the Gap, National Leaders of Governance sessions.  The Safeguarding Governor has completed the LA Governor Service Safeguarding training programme.
